Church of the Transfiguration: A Brief History

On January 31, 1892, the first service of the Church of the Transfiguration was conducted by a visiting Rector in the nearby Norwood Avenue School. By March, 1894 the church had it's first chapel, erected on our present site, and in June, 1894 the Transfiguration was admitted to union with the Diocese. The Rev. Dr. Donald A. Lavallee joined our church as a curate in 1965 and became Rector in 1967. He served as Rector until July of 1999.

Rev. Dr. Gary C. Lemery, joined the Transfiguration in February of 2000 and served as our rector until his retirement at the end of 2009.

We are currently beginning the process of searching for a new rector and the Rev. Mary J. Korte has joined us as Interim Rector to help us through the process and to provide spiritual leadership during this time of transition. We are hoping that we can complete the transition process and issue a call to a new rector by the end of 2010.

Many changes have occurred since that first service, but the mission of the Transfiguration has remained the same - to unite all who care and to spread the word that Christ is still living. We will always be a caring church, ministering in the name of Jesus Christ.
